The Continuation

I

heard the click of the tape recorder stopping and I watched as Dr. Vaskler pulled it out of the cassette player, flipped it over to the other side, and restarted it.

I also heard the clicking sound once more when he hit the play button. Somehow that triggered my need for another cigarette, and he must have known it, for he handed me one at that precise moment.

I grabbed it along with the lighter and lit it up. There was no hesitation about letting me have the lighter, and I passed it back to him. Then I took a long drag off the cigarette and puffed the smoke into the air as I had done once before.

“Do you need a break?” he asked. This time he had no emotion in his voice. He talked to me normally, as two normal human beings having a conversation would talk, not like a doctor to his patient.

“No,” I replied. “I would like to finish...”

He smiled. Pleased that I wanted to continue. It seemed to me at this point he was invested in my story. I could see that he was optimistic and becoming more aware of the possibility of the unknown.

Was it possible I had changed his mindset? I wasn’t sure. All I knew was that he was no longer analyzing me but listening to me—hearing me for the first time.

Now it was time to tell him why I did what I did. The part he had been waiting for. What led up to the horrendous act. I looked at him and turned my legs around to face him. He watched my every move.

“Are you ready?” I asked him. My tone went from light to serious. And I watched as he shook his head yes. He knew what I meant.

“It didn’t just stop with my grandparents. No, this demon followed me everywhere. It wanted me and it wanted to possess me. Just like Anna. Others as well, come to think about it... I’m not its only target and there are many targets. For I am not the last nor the first it has attacked.”

“I see,” he said in agreement.

“Do you?” I questioned him. “Do you know the feeling when the hair stands up on the back of your neck?”

“Yes, I’ve had that feeling come over me before,” he replied.

I shot him a grimacing smile. “That’s what happens when they are close to you...” I watched as his face reflected a wince of fright. But he quickly tried to act nonchalant, as if it didn’t bother him when he saw I noticed his demeanor.

“It’s like your body knows and reacts as a warning, doctor. Or that gut feeling when you’re alone and you feel as if someone is watching you... That’s them, as well.”

I was freaking him out. I could tell by the sudden glances he would make with his eyes to a corner of a room when he felt like something had moved there. His reaction tickled me, giving me some form of satisfaction.
